Dear friend of Mrs. Bates' Kindergarten class,

With the help from you and your loved ones, I would like to teach our class about maps in a fun, interactive way. One of our North Carolina Kindergarten standards of learning is that a student will be able to create and interpret simple maps, models, and drawings of the home, school, and other environments. A fun way to teach the students how to read a map and also learn how to make a map, happens to correspond with Valentine's Day. We will begin this activity with a large white United States map. This is where we need your help. Our class is hoping to receive Valentine cards or letters from all 50 states. With each Valentine or letter we receive, we will color in that state (according to the postmark) on our enlarged United States map. Please send your Valentine or letter directly to the school. We will read each Valentine or letter before we color in the state. Please be sure to include the student's name on the envelope, so the class knows who the Valentine is for. Our address is:
